SJF Advisory Services (SJFAS) is a nonprofit organization that provides assistance to and increases access to capital for entrepreneurial businesses in order to expand their positive community economic development and environmental outcomes. SJFAS works with hundreds of companies each year through one-on-one assistance, events, and publications focused on particular sectors and stages of growth. A key area of SJFAS expertise is in helping companies get ready for equity investment or other financing. The organization also promotes environmental and workforce innovation by assisting and showcasing companies with successful cleantech business models and effective workforce engagement strategies.

SJF Advisory Services’ three current program areas include:

1. Inform & Inspire

   SJF Advisory Services compiles and disseminates best practices in impact investing, and highlights innovative entrepreneurs and practitioners to accelerate the adoption of positive impact business and investing practices.

   • Green Jobs Awards
     In partnership with Green For All, SJF has launched the Green Jobs Awards program which will identify, recognize and promote private companies that are leaders in quality green job creation.  The program will help to define ‘green jobs’ terminology and confirm the reality of green job creation while inspiring entrepreneurs, investors, policymakers and the public.    • Beyond Paycheck-to-Paycheck
     In 2004, SJF’s ‘Exits and Employees’ research initiative released its report, Beyond Paycheck-to-Paycheck: Wealth-Building Strategies for Venture Capital Funds to Use With Portfolio Companies and Their Employees. SJF is now conducting follow-up research, documenting impacts of the original report’s strategies and surveying the industry for the latest in employee engagement and wealth-building best practices.

2. Convene & Connect

   SJF Advisory Services produces convenings that bring diverse constituencies together, informing & inspiring while helping to bridge the traditional gaps between entrepreneurs, investors, economic developers, policymakers, and community leaders.

   • SJF Summit
     In June 2009, the SJF Summit on the New Green Economy brought together a diverse audience to learn about opportunities for entrepreneurs, investors, and communities in a green economy. We will produce the second annual Summit on September 14-15, 2010, again with a dynamic, multi-sector audience and innovative leaders from across the country.    • CleanLinks – NYC and Research Triangle
     SJF founded the networking platform, CleanLinks, to enable opportunities for business networking among cleantech professionals. This network gives entrepreneurs, investors and service providers working in the fields of cleantech, renewable energy, energy efficiency and other environmental business sectors an opportunity to connect and grow the industry. SJF, along with regional partners, host these free happy hour networking events every other month in both NYC and Raleigh-Durham.

3. Assist & Accelerate

   SJF Advisory Services’ affiliation with SJF Ventures, an active impact investment venture capital fund, allows us to tap the expertise and networks of active equity investors to annually assist hundreds of companies beyond the SJF Ventures’ portfolio.

   • Direct Technical Assistance
     SJF provides direct technical assistance to cleantech and other positive impact entrepreneurs, such as business plan feedback, financing strategy feedback, employee engagement assistance and referrals to additional resources and funding sources.
   • SJF Cleantech Mentorship Program
     SJF launched a Cleantech Mentorship Program out of its New York office this year. This nine-month program includes content and feedback from SJF investment professionals, monthly meetings with an experienced mentor, peer roundtable discussions, and broader networking events.
